Setting the standard in smoke control excellence

Founded by Sam Stothers in 1983, G.S. Stothers Smoke Ventilation Specialists Ltd has become a leading name in the smoke control industry, delivering unparalleled expertise and exceptional service quality across Northern Ireland, ROI and GB.

According to his son, Managing Director Jonney Stothers, the Stothers family values lie at the heart of operations. Jonney himself attends to clients personally, even in emergencies, reflecting the company’s commitment to go the extra mile.

With a close-knit and respectful work environment, the G.S. Stothers team welcomes new members like family, fostering a culture of dedication and mutual support. Customer focus and years of experience in an evolving industry have been instrumental in the Newtownards firm’s longevity.

Formally known as G.S. Stothers Mechanical and Electrical Engineering Ltd, the business has demonstrated remarkable adaptability throughout the past four decades.

“Adapting to industry changes and technological advancements has been vital to our growth,” admitted Jonney. “Specialising in the smoke control industry since our inception, we have witnessed the widespread evolution of products and techniques.”

As members of the Smoke Control Association, the firm remains at the forefront of the latest industry developments, ensuring compliance through IFC under the SDI19 scheme and staying informed through regular training and supplier development days.

Milestones

G.S. Stothers has marked numerous milestones throughout its journey. For example, in 1990, just hours before the official opening of the CastleCourt Shopping Centre, Director Sam Stothers received an emergency call. The fire and smoke curtains – installed by another company – had fallen; they needed someone to urgently fix them. Sam came to the rescue and rectified the situation, and so began a long working relationship with CastleCourt Shopping Centre, that still stands today.

The company’s pragmatism and determination have been driving forces throughout its operation. “We are proud of our pragmatic approach, having worked through the troubles on both sides of the community when few businesses could,” said Jonney. “Additionally, being involved in iconic projects such as the Titanic Museum and the Banks Building after the Primark fire has been truly rewarding.”

Winning the Special Recognition Award at this year’s Northern Ireland Electrical Awards ceremony has meant a lot to his father, company founder, Sam. “It serves as a testament to the countless hours of hard work, dedication and personal sacrifices made over the last 40 years, including missed family holidays.”

What sets G.S. Stothers apart from its competitors is the extensive knowledge and experience the firm has acquired over four decades. With a comprehensive skill set encompassing pneumatics, electrical and mechanics, the team excels in diverse projects ranging from museums to hospitals.

Exceptional service

“Going above and beyond for our clients is our standard, as we believe in nurturing long-lasting relationships through exceptional service,” said Jonney.

G.S. Stothers places great emphasis on fostering a positive work environment and nurturing professional growth within the team. Staff morale is consistently high, thanks to the Stothers family’s personal approach, open-door policy and commitment to work-life balance. Continuous training opportunities are provided, enabling both management and staff members to identify and pursue worthwhile developmental prospects. The “lead by example” ethos ensures a collective “can-do” attitude among the team.

To remain at the forefront of the smoke control industry, G.S. Stothers prioritises innovation and continuous learning. “We engage in continuous education,” Jonney said, “attend training seminars and collaborate closely with world leading smoke control manufacturer Colt as their sole distributors in Northern Ireland. Every day is a ‘school day’ and presents a new learning curve, making our work engaging and fulfilling.”

Looking ahead, G.S. Stothers aims to sustain and exceed its current growth trajectory. Said Jonney, “We are focused on expanding further into the Republic of Ireland, strengthening existing relationships and establishing new ones. As we celebrate our 40-year milestone, we remain committed to expanding our portfolio and delivering excellence in smoke ventilation and beyond.”
