Family business BM Electrical Wholesale celebrates 30 years of trading

A busy five years since its last milestone celebration have seen BM Electrical Wholesale continue to expand and innovate while maintaining the personal touch of a family business.

Managing Director Ken Robinson steers the firm that was founded 30 years ago and has been joined in the business by his sons Joshua, Luke and Tom.

“As MD, I am delighted that my three sons are all now involved in the business,” said Ken. “One in accounts and operations, one in IT and e-commerce and the youngest has worked though the various operational disciplines and is about to start out on his sales journey.”

Another key development since BM Electrical celebrated 25 years of trading has been the addition of a Belfast branch, joining sites in Ballymena, Londonderry and its Coleraine headquarters.

In 2019, the business acquired Fairley & Smyth Electrical Wholesalers in the Duncrue Industrial Estate, establishing its first presence in the city and embarking on a substantial investment in the site.

The past five years have not been without their challenges for the business, however, including the Covid-19 pandemic and Brexit.

“Our staff were incredible during the pandemic and fully supportive and cooperative of the changes and necessities that we had to make to adhere to Government rules and guidelines, and we owe them our thanks,” said Ken.

“Just as we were recovering from the pandemic, Boris Johnston took us out of the EU and we were faced with new hurdles – ensuring we had a supply of goods from our UK and European suppliers.”
